Editorial conception: The Centre des Arts and Music & Digital Cultures (MCD)
Digital creation, new media art, emergent art, digital art … The definitions are numerous when it comes to approaching relations between art and science. This work is a snapshot of international artistic practices in a digital age. Should we talk about digital art or simply contemporary art? What are the relations between art, research and enterprise, art and innovation? What are the economic stakes tied to digital creation? Digital art history began with "on computer” art, over 50 years ago. Since then, applications have increased: art in network, interactive art, immersive, generative, Bio-art, Nano-art, 3D creation, sound art, live AV art (audiovisual), art of light, art in the public space, augmented reality. The artists profile has changed, so have the works and that of the spectator.
On the Centre des Arts invitation, the Music & Digital Cultures review called for international contributors to make this overview the most representative of the art and the digital cultures, in both productivity and diversity. We also asked artists, producers, institutional, contractors, developers and engineers of Africa, America, Europe and Asia, the question: What is, according to you, digital creation?
This alliance between art, science and industry, transforms cities, increases bodies, and participates in the development of an economy based on collaboration and participation. Architecture becomes interactive and relational. From the Web to the Internet of objects, digital to post digital, this new industrial, international and democratic revolution gives access to all, prototyping and digital manufacturing, knowledge and artistic practice, the cultural freedom and a new conception…
