Interactive Virtual Characters Dancing on Novel Glasses-free Tabletop 3D Display

As Japan’s sole National Research and Development Agency specializing in the field of information and communications technology, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) is charged with promoting ICT sector as well as research and development in ICT, which drives economic growth and creates an affluent, safe and secure society.

The “fVisiOn” project provides virtual 3D media naturally alongside the real media, thereby, it is augmenting ordinary tabletop communications. Its designed concept floats as virtual 3D images of a 360°-view onto an empty, flat tabletop surface. Our novel method produces glasses-free 3D images by using a conical optical element and numerous tiny projectors underneath the round table (90cm in a diameter and 70cm in a height). Multiple viewers can share the experience and enjoy full-color, 5-cm-tall characters dancing on the tabletop surface.

In the demonstration of the venue, visitors can enjoy interactive contents which feature Japanese dreams as seen in Manga and Anime. For example, creatures printed on cards are summoned and fight on the table as shown in future 3D games. Another card invites Hatsune Miku, the digital diva supported by Japanese teens, on the table. “Petit” Miku energetically sings and dances on her stage.
